Exactly! My thoughts entirely. I can't stop cracking up at the thought of hooning a van. If the wife would learn stick I'd already have one of these as my daily.

As someone who hoons a van almost daily, it is extremely hilarious.
The 5 might actually be very hoonable though.

Yepper. The un-minivan minivan.

From what I understand it's just a slightly longer and taller 3 which I already know to be very hoonable. I wouldn't even want a full on speed3 conversion if I had one. Just a corksport catback, koni yellow, and summer tires. Then I'd be taking the whole family around the autocross.

A reminder of what Car and Driver did, so that we may lust forever, for even though it made no financial sense for Mazda to do it themselves, it should have been because it could be done and the gods of hoonage demand it:

A minivan that is actually relatively mini, especially by American standards. I love it for being honest and an all around decent vehicle. Not so keen on that stupid smiley style of the later model but I'm hoping they keep this thing around with Mazda's current design language (if they haven't killed it off due to the CX-5 or whatever...)

I always like to bring up C&D made their own homebuilt MS5 . Never followed up on the build, kinda left us hanging, wish they did more of this stuff now.

FWIW, I bought a Touring edition with Nav in Late December of 2005, after I saw a write-up of one in R&T. Didn't use the 3rd row that much, but it was very handy when we needed it, including one time when we took 7 people including luggage from the Jersey Shore back to NYC. (Admittedly very tight, but I was driving.) Drove it until October of last year, putting 160K in that time. (Very long commute up to Westport, CT.) Never much trouble with it, apart from the horrible tendency to go through it's 50 Series tires. If I were you, I'd go to Mavis or a similar place with a good replacement warranty.
I sold it for $4,000 because I'd given it to my son for his last 2 years of college, and I'd gotten an `03 ES-300 instead. (Very tough to own 2 cars in Manhattan!) Great Handling, and decent acceleration all the way to the end of ownership. If you''ll be travelling with 6 people frequently I'd look into a system of portable Roof Racks combined with a waterproof travel bag. You can find them on Amazon pretty easily.

I owned a 07' sport automatic. Great car for my growing family. Cool sliding doors and windows that actually went all the way down. Third seat was usually folded but I had one time fitted 8 grown adults and traveled to Dave and Busters to have a great night out!
Yeah the only problem was the "OK" Mpg, horrible tires wear, and bushings that would make noise when below freezing. Other then those I had a good time with it.
